The Interop Stress Test: LI.FI's Philipp Zentner on Bridges, Tokens, and Bitcoin Trading

LI.FI's Philipp Zentner talks bridge architecture, token economics, and why Bitcoin still trades so little on-chain with Alexei Zamyatin.
In episode three of the Bullish on Bitcoin Show, BOB co-founder Alexei Zamyatin sat down with Philipp Zentner, CEO and co-founder of LI.FI — one of the most established cross-chain aggregation platforms in the industry, now processing roughly $80 billion in transaction volume for over 1,100 B2B partners. The conversation covered how bridging architecture has evolved, why so many bridges are quietly consolidating into a handful of dominant infrastructure providers, the messy economics of tokens, and the recurring question of why Bitcoin still trades so little on-chain relative to its market size.
Here's a rundown of the highlights.
From Bridge Aggregator to DeFi Infrastructure
Zentner explained that LI.FI's origin story was straightforward: he and co-founder Max recognized early that blockchain fragmentation was inevitable — decentralization simply comes at a price, and no single chain would ever be "enough." Watching Optimism and Arbitrum sponsor early interoperability hackathons convinced them the opportunity looked a lot like what Stripe did for payments: aggregate access to fragmented infrastructure into one integration. LI.FI started as a bridge aggregator, quickly added DEX aggregation, and has since expanded into perps, yield, and prediction markets — effectively becoming, in Zentner's words, an investment API for DeFi. Their recently launched Earn product emerged from direct customer demand, as partners increasingly wanted to offer yield to their own users without building the infrastructure themselves.
Mint-and-Burn, Liquidity Networks, and Intents: Three Flavors of Bridging
When Alexei asked whether intent-based systems represent real progress over older bridge designs, Zentner pushed back on the framing. In his view, intents aren't an upgrade — they're simply a different architecture, each with its own tradeoffs. Mint-and-burn bridges carry finality risk but are highly capital efficient; liquidity networks like Stargate sacrifice some capital efficiency for speed; and intent systems, where third-party solvers execute on a user's behalf, are fast and cheap but run on "mercenary capital" that clusters wherever demand is thickest, leaving other routes underserved. As he put it, aggregation is the only way to actually capture the advantages of all three at once.
He also flagged a structural shift: many bridges that were centralized four years ago were funded by community capital, whereas today's centralized bridges increasingly operate on their own balance sheets — meaning users bear less direct risk, but systemic risk grows if too much volume concentrates behind a small number of dominant, centralized providers.
Consolidation at the Base Layer
Zentner sees the messaging and mint-and-burn layer — the actual plumbing that lets chains talk to each other — becoming more centralized over time, largely because issuers standardize on one provider (citing USDT0's partnership with LayerZero as an example). He expects further consolidation as institutions arrive and, following the JPMorgan playbook, eventually want to own more of the infrastructure stack themselves rather than relying on third parties. Alexei noted that a recent hack affecting KelpDAO and LayerZero underscored how much systemic risk still sits at this base layer, since most bridges ultimately depend on the same small set of messaging providers.
On LI.FI's own positioning within this consolidation trend, Zentner was direct about staying neutral:
"LI.FI really tries to be market neutral, or is market neutral... we do the plumbing essentially. We are core financial infrastructure for this space to be able to mature and find adoption fast."
The Token Debate: "If You Need a Token to Incentivize Someone to Use You, the Problem You're Solving Isn't Big Enough"
One of the episode's more candid stretches covered why LI.FI has never launched a token. Zentner argued that on-chain liquidity is still too shallow to properly support a public token market comparable to traditional equities, and that managing a token becomes an enormous distraction for a team trying to build long-term infrastructure. He was blunt about the emotional toll of a prior token launch experience: the influx of people pitching questionable schemes the moment a project signals it's launching a token was, in his words, one of the worst periods he's experienced in the industry.
Alexei offered a partial counterpoint, arguing tokens can be a powerful tool for building loyal communities and giving early users a genuine stake in a protocol's success — pointing to Chainlink's famously devoted community as an example of what a well-executed token can achieve, while acknowledging that mercenary airdrop farming has undermined much of that potential elsewhere. Zentner's closing view struck a middle ground: tokens aren't inherently bad, but the market for them isn't mature enough yet, and — only half-joking — he said he's glad LI.FI doesn't have one given how much mental bandwidth it would consume alongside the rest of the business.
Aggregators, Over-Quoting, and Protecting Users
The conversation turned to a less flattering dynamic in the aggregator space: some providers "over-quote," showing users better prices than they can actually deliver, particularly through proprietary market makers operating underneath RFQ systems. Zentner acknowledged this is a real, industry-wide problem — the incentive to misquote exists because occasional bad executions on large trades can still be profitable even after penalties. He said LI.FI is actively building transaction simulation, penalty tracking, and provider-vetting systems to guard against it, distinguishing this from a separate public dispute where a competitor published an aggressive comparison chart that Zentner said used mismatched methodology.
Zentner pointed to a Bitcoin-specific version of the same problem: several cross-chain providers advertise Bitcoin swap times of one or two minutes, when Bitcoin's actual block time makes that impossible — a tell, in his view, for which providers are being straightforward with users versus optimizing marketing over accuracy.
On fixed-rate quoting — standard in traditional finance but rare in crypto — Zentner said LI.FI has actually built a beta product offering fixed-rate quotes for Bitcoin, but demand across their diverse client base remains low today. He expects that to change as more traditional finance players enter the space and require guaranteed execution, though he estimated that shift is still a couple of years out.
Why Bitcoin Still Doesn't Trade Much On-Chain
The final major topic returned to a familiar tension: Bitcoin sees roughly $800 billion a month in centralized exchange volume, yet on-chain trading remains a small fraction of that. Zentner's explanation centered on why people hold BTC in the first place: Bitcoin buyers are typically driven by long-term conviction rather than active trading, and the largest holders tend to be the most conservative, rarely touching money markets, bridges, or even a Layer 2 Chain. He also pointed to a general chicken-and-egg problem — fewer Bitcoin money markets exist, so there's less reason to move BTC on-chain in the first place, reinforcing the pattern.
Alexei pushed back gently, noting Bitcoin actually has the widest distribution of any crypto asset and that both Bitcoin and Ethereum communities increasingly hold both assets — so the explanation isn't purely about whale concentration. He argued the more interesting shift will come as stablecoins make on-ramping dramatically easier, removing the historical dependence on centralized exchanges for acquiring assets in the first place:
"Previously, on-ramping was such a big problem... now, with regulatory clarity happening, there are so many more players that can provide you with an on-ramp and give you a stablecoin. And once you have a stable, there's no need for you to go to Binance or Coinbase."
Zentner offered a candid, if sobering, timeline for BOB and Bitcoin DeFi more broadly: "the very German way," he estimated three years before the ecosystem sees the level of Bitcoin utility it's aiming for — a view Alexei didn't dispute, reflecting on how difficult it was to raise conviction for Bitcoin Layer 2 infrastructure when BOB first started building, only to watch roughly eighty competing Bitcoin L2 projects appear and then mostly disappear as the market proved far harder to convert than founders anticipated.
AI, Security, and a Space That Needs to Grow Up
Closing on security, Alexei raised the recent KelpDAO incident — a sophisticated attack on RPC infrastructure rather than a classic smart contract exploit — and asked whether AI will ultimately help or hurt on-chain security. Zentner's take was measured: AI capability is unevenly distributed, and countless legacy systems worldwide remain poorly maintained and vulnerable, meaning the near-term picture will likely get messier before it improves. At the same time, he argued crypto's hack totals remain tiny compared to the scale traditional finance handles daily, and that DeFi's core advantage over centralized custody is that surviving protocols become more battle-tested and robust over time, whereas centralized institutions face a different long-term risk: human corruption. Both agreed the current wave of exploits, while painful, is ultimately a forcing function the industry needs — pushing projects toward more professional, disciplined security practices.
