How to Move Native BTC Across Chains Without Wrapping or a CEX

A route guide for moving native BTC to Ethereum, Base and other chains: what you start with, which protocol to use, and what you end up holding.

You don't need an exchange account or a wrapped token to get your BTC onto another chain. A number of protocols take native BTC straight from your Bitcoin wallet and deliver the asset you want on the destination chain, in one flow. This guide covers how that works, which protocols support which routes, and what you receive at the end.

Looking for the bigger picture on quotes, custody and chain coverage? Start with our guide to the best Bitcoin bridges for native BTC.

Key takeaways

  • BOB Gateway, Garden Finance and THORChain each take native BTC from your Bitcoin wallet and deliver a destination asset in one flow, with no wrapped BTC step on your end.
  • "Moving BTC across chains" usually means swapping BTC value into another asset on another chain. Native BTC itself only exists on Bitcoin.
  • BOB Gateway swaps native BTC into assets on 12 chains, including Ethereum and Base.
  • THORChain supports Ethereum and Base.
  • An exchange route takes four steps across two accounts: deposit, sell, buy and withdraw. A direct route takes one Bitcoin transaction.

How can you move native BTC across chains without wrapping it?

Use a protocol that accepts BTC straight from your Bitcoin wallet and quotes you a destination asset before you send anything. BOB Gateway, Garden Finance and THORChain all work this way.

You send one Bitcoin transaction, and the protocol delivers the asset you asked for on the destination chain. No wrapped BTC token passes through your hands.

What does "moving native BTC across chains" mean?

Native BTC only exists on the Bitcoin network. When a protocol says it moves native BTC "to Ethereum" or "to Base", it means you send BTC on Bitcoin and receive a different asset on another chain. That could be ETH, a stablecoin or a BTC-backed token, depending on your quote.

There are three versions of this:

  • Native BTC in, a different asset out. BOB Gateway, Garden Finance and THORChain take native BTC and deliver ETH, a stablecoin or another chain's native asset.
  • Native BTC in, a BTC-backed token out. tBTC mints a 1:1 BTC-backed token you can redeem later. Gateway can also deliver wrapped BTC, like wBTC or tBTC, if you choose it.
  • Wrapped BTC in, wrapped BTC out on another chain. A token bridge moves an already-wrapped token like WBTC between chains. Native BTC isn't involved at all.

This guide focuses on the first one.

Do you need wrapped BTC to move Bitcoin cross-chain?

No. There are two workflows.

With manual wrapping, you send BTC to a bridge or custodian, get a wrapped token back, and then use or swap that token yourself. With a direct route, you send BTC to a protocol and receive your chosen asset in the same flow.

BOB Gateway removes the wrapping step: you don't need wBTC or tBTC before you swap. That doesn't make wrapped BTC pointless. If you want to keep BTC exposure while using it in Ethereum DeFi, wrapped BTC is the right thing to hold, and you can pick it as your Gateway destination. The difference is that wrapping becomes an outcome you choose, not a step you have to take first.

Can you move BTC cross-chain without a centralized exchange?

Yes. On an exchange, you deposit BTC, sell it, buy your destination asset and withdraw it to the destination chain: four steps across two accounts. A direct route skips all of that. You request a quote, send one Bitcoin transaction and receive the asset, with no exchange account involved.

How does BOB Gateway move native BTC across chains?

BOB Gateway is a Bitcoin intents and RFQ-based protocol. You say what you want to end up with, and a solver delivers it. A BTC-to-token Gateway swap works like this (Gateway docs):

  1. You request a quote. Gateway returns a signed quote with routing, fees and your guaranteed minimum output.
  2. You create an order and get a unique Bitcoin deposit address for it.
  3. You sign one Bitcoin transaction to that address.
  4. Once the deposit confirms, the solver delivers your output in a single atomic transaction. If it can't, your BTC is refunded.
  5. The asset arrives on the destination chain.

BOB Gateway isn't a lock-and-mint bridge. It doesn't hold your BTC in a bridge contract and issue a token against it. Destination gas comes out of the swap quote, so you don't need to hold that chain's gas token to receive your asset. Routes change as we add chains and assets, so check the supported routes list for the asset and chain before you swap.

Can BOB Gateway move native BTC to Ethereum?

Yes. You can start with native BTC and receive assets on Ethereum, including ETH, USDT, USDC and wBTC, without an exchange account.

It's also the route we've quote-tested. On 14 September 2026, we compared five native BTC swaps on Ethereum across BOB Gateway, Garden Finance, THORChain, NEAR Intents and Relay, and Gateway gave the highest quote in four of the five. Full results are in Cheapest Bitcoin Bridges for Native BTC.

Garden Finance and THORChain also take native BTC to Ethereum. THORChain is useful if you want native ETH itself, since its liquidity pools swap between native assets directly.

Can BOB Gateway move native BTC to Base?

Yes. From native BTC, Gateway delivers ETH, USDC, oUSDT, cbBTC, EURC and tBTC on Base.

Garden Finance and THORChain also reach Base. Chainflip doesn't list Base among its supported chains (Chainflip docs).

ProtocolNative BTC to Base? What you receive

Which route should you use?

It depends on what you want to hold at the end.

Your goalRoute to use
BTC into ETH on EthereumBOB Gateway, Garden Finance or THORChain, compared by live quote
BTC into a stablecoin on EthereumBOB Gateway or Garden Finance, compared by live quote
BTC into an asset on BaseBOB Gateway for the widest asset choice, Garden Finance for cbBTC, or THORChain

Quotes move with the market, so compare a live quote for your exact amount and destination before you send BTC.
