In the first episode of the Bullish on Bitcoin Show, BOB co-founder Alexei Zamyatin sat down with Dan Held — Bitcoin OG, investor, former Kraken and Blockchain.com marketer, and someone who's lived through every Bitcoin "death" of the last fifteen years. The conversation ranged from where we are in the current cycle, to the quantum computing debate nobody wants to have, to the uncomfortable truth that Bitcoin still doesn't have a good answer for self-custodial DeFi.

Dan has spent the better part of fifteen years in this industry — through Kraken, Blockchain.com, and now as an active investor across the Bitcoin DeFi landscape — and that vantage point shaped nearly every answer in the episode. Rather than reacting to headlines, he kept returning to first principles: what actually changes Bitcoin's code, what actually threatens its security model, and what's simply noise generated by people with an agenda. That framing carried through a wide-ranging discussion that touched on market cycles, institutional adoption, the quantum computing debate, and the persistent gap between Bitcoin's growing legitimacy and its lack of usable, trust-minimized DeFi infrastructure.

Here's a rundown of the highlights.

Is the Four-Year Cycle Dead?

The episode opened with the question everyone in the space has been asking: is this the weirdest halving cycle yet, and is the old four-year playbook over? Dan’s take was refreshingly unbothered. He argued that people distort the picture by comparing today's price to a 2021 all-time high that only existed for a brief moment, rather than looking at average prices over time. By that measure, Bitcoin's trajectory looks a lot healthier than the headlines suggest.

He pointed out that Bitcoin has already flushed out the weak hands — the OG holders throwing in the towel are, paradoxically, a bullish signal, since they represent the last wave of forced selling before demand can take over again. All that's needed from here, he said, is a demand catalyst: a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve announcement, an easing of geopolitical tension, or something else entirely unexpected. He drew a direct parallel to 2013, when Bitcoin ground sideways at $100 for seven months before rocketing to $1,200 — a reminder that Bitcoin has always moved in ways nobody predicts.

Zooming out further, Held argued this cycle may be the most favorable "return versus risk" setup in Bitcoin's history, simply because the existential threats of past cycles — governments actively trying to kill it — have largely disappeared, replaced by banks, asset managers, and even presidents treating it as legitimate.

Institutionalization: Winning, Not Selling Out

A recurring theme was whether Bitcoin becoming "too mainstream" is a problem. Held's framework for judging this was simple: has the code changed to let institutions control or corrupt the protocol? It hasn't. Does institutional trading introduce existential risk to the network? It doesn't. Everything else — including recurring claims that Bitcoin's price is being "suppressed" the way gold's allegedly was — he dismissed as narrative rather than fact.

As Held put it, institutionalization is simply what winning looks like:

"Bitcoin doesn't scale to become a global money if it just remains peer-to-peer traded in the basement... for Bitcoin to be mainstream, we have to have institutions trading it."

He also flagged an underappreciated data point: Bitcoin ETF holders have shown less panic-selling during this bear market than many spot holders, suggesting that ETF flows — whether retail or institutional — are stickier than people assume.

The Quantum Computing Debate: Theoretical, Not Urgent

The conversation's most substantive stretch was on quantum computing — specifically, what happens to Satoshi's roughly one million untouched coins if a sufficiently powerful quantum computer can eventually crack elliptic-curve private keys. Held was clear that dismissing this as impossible is the wrong framing, but he was equally clear that panic is unwarranted today. The real debate, he explained, isn't whether it's possible — it's when, and estimates realistically range from five to twenty-plus years out.

He walked through the practical complications: post-quantum signature schemes produce much larger transactions, meaning a mass migration of coins to quantum-resistant addresses could congest the network and reopen the politically fraught block-size debate. There's also non-zero risk of introducing bugs in a new signature scheme.

The thorniest question, though, is political rather than technical: what happens to coins that are never moved to a safe address? Held laid out the two real options — either the protocol burns unmigrated coins (which he opposes, since it means the protocol deciding who owns what) or the network does nothing and lets anyone who cracks a key keep it. He put himself firmly in the "do nothing" camp, arguing that once the protocol starts making ownership decisions, it opens a door that's very hard to close.

Alexei pushed back on the doomsday framing that circulates on crypto Twitter — the idea that a state actor cracking Satoshi's keys would immediately dump the coins on the open market. Held called this scenario poor game theory:

"This entity that spent decades building this quantum computer — the first thing they're going to do is not sign with a private key and say, 'hey, by the way, I cracked it'... they'd have a very structured and safe process."

Both agreed the bigger near-term risk isn't a dramatic Satoshi-coin event — it's quieter attacks on smaller, older wallets that could go unnoticed for a long time, and the reputational damage from sensationalist reporting whenever the topic resurfaces. Held's bottom line for anyone worried: there's nothing to act on today, and he specifically cautioned against rushing into "quantum-resistant" Bitcoin wallets being marketed opportunistically around the fear.

The two also traded theories on why Satoshi never provably burned the genesis coins — from a lost hard drive, to Occam's razor simplicity, to the possibility that Satoshi intended the coins as a long-term security subsidy for miners. Nobody knows, and as Held noted, "these are human beings, after all. They're not gods."

The Real Gap: Bitcoin Still Isn't Ready for DeFi

The most pointed part of the conversation was Alexei's observation that despite record institutional adoption, Bitcoin still lacks an easy, trust-minimized way for regular users to actually use their BTC — trade it, lend it, borrow against it — without handing it to a centralized custodian. As he put it, if you have to ask your bank whether you're allowed to move your Bitcoin, it's no longer Bitcoin.

Held agreed this is the space's biggest unsolved problem, and explained why it's structurally hard: Bitcoin has no native smart contracting layer, so any Layer 2 activity requires a bridged or wrapped representation of BTC — assets like WBTC or tBTC — secured by a multisig or federation rather than Bitcoin itself. He's invested broadly across Bitcoin DeFi precisely because he isn't sure which approach — Ordinals-style base-layer innovation, BitVM-based constructions like BOB's, or something else entirely — will ultimately crack it.

On the practical trading side, both noted that atomic swap technology has existed since 2012, yet on-chain cross-chain BTC swap volume (roughly 300–400M/month)isatinyfractionofthe~800B in monthly centralized exchange volume. Held's read is that this is mostly a market-timing problem rather than a technology problem: the last cycle was institution-led rather than retail-led, and it's retail speculation — swapping, lending, borrowing — that historically drives DeFi adoption, as seen in Ethereum's 2020 DeFi summer.

Alexei added a sharper point: even where cross-chain infrastructure exists, much of it caters to power users rather than retail, and some protocols have struggled with reputational issues tied to illicit fund flows — a problem he believes intent-based, solver-driven models (which pair institutional liquidity providers with retail traders) are better positioned to solve than fully permissionless designs.

The Underpriced Narrative

Asked to name the single most underpriced Bitcoin narrative for the next twelve months, Held didn't hesitate: Bitcoin DeFi. He's been making this case for nearly four years, and believes the space remains under-discussed relative to its long-term significance — even as broader sentiment stays cautious and some long-time builders quietly exit the industry after a grinding few years.
